Moving from Instagram or WhatsApp selling to your own Shopify store

Published 5 min read

Many product businesses in India start on Instagram or WhatsApp. You post a product, customers message you, you share the price, collect payment by UPI and arrange delivery. It costs nothing to start and it works. Until it doesn’t.

This guide explains when a store of your own starts to make sense, what changes when you have one, what stays the same, and what to get ready before you start.

Signs you’ve outgrown selling in chats

  • You answer the same questions all day. Price, sizes, colours, “COD available?”, “When will it arrive?”
  • Orders get lost. A customer confirmed three days ago, but the chat has scrolled away and nobody followed up.
  • Payments need checking by hand. You match UPI screenshots against your bank app before you can ship.
  • Stock lives in your head. You sell something, then find out it’s out of stock in that size.
  • Customers can’t see everything. Your full range is spread across posts, highlights and catalogue messages.

If two or three of these sound familiar, a store will save you time every day.

What changes with your own store

Customers can browse your full range, pick sizes or options, and place and pay for an order without waiting for a reply, at any hour. They can pay online or choose cash on delivery, depending on what you offer.

On your side, orders, stock and customer details sit in one place. You can see what sold, what’s running low and who bought what. And you get one link to put in your bio, your WhatsApp status and your ads, which takes people straight to the product.

What stays the same

Instagram is still where most customers will discover you, and WhatsApp is still where many will want to talk to you. A store doesn’t replace either. It gives the conversation somewhere to end: instead of typing out prices and collecting screenshots, you send a product link.

Be clear about one thing: a store doesn’t bring customers on its own. People still have to come from somewhere, whether that’s social media, ads, search or word of mouth. What a good store does is make it easier for the people who arrive to understand your products and buy.

What to get ready before you start

  • Your product list. Names, prices, sizes or other options, and how many you have of each. A simple spreadsheet is enough.
  • Photos and your logo. Clear photos that show the real product. If you don’t have good images yet, they can be created for the store, but they should still show the product accurately.
  • Your policies. How you ship, whether you accept returns, and how refunds work. You decide these; they become pages on your store.
  • Payment and shipping accounts. Payment providers such as Razorpay, Cashfree or PhonePe, and shipping partners such as Shiprocket, approve and contract with you directly. Start these early, because approval can take time.
  • A domain name. Ideally your brand name, so the store is easy to remember and share.

Moving your customers across

  • Put the store link in your Instagram bio and pin a post announcing it.
  • Share the link with past buyers on WhatsApp, with a reason to visit, such as a new collection.
  • Keep answering messages, but reply with product links instead of prices.
  • Turn on order notifications on WhatsApp, so customers still hear from you where they’re used to it.

What to take from it

  • Chats are a great way to start, but they don’t scale past a certain number of orders.
  • A store handles browsing, ordering and payment, so you can spend chat time on real conversations.
  • Instagram and WhatsApp stay: the store is where those conversations lead.
  • Get your product list, photos, policies and provider accounts ready first.
