What basic SEO on a new Shopify store does, and doesn't do
Published 4 min read
SEO, short for search engine optimization, is the work of helping search engines like Google find your store, understand what you sell and show it to people searching for it. It’s often sold as a way to get to the top of Google quickly. It isn’t, and a store owner who expects that will be disappointed.
This guide explains what a basic SEO setup on a new Shopify store does, what it doesn’t do, and what you can do after launch.
What a basic setup usually covers
- Page titles and descriptions. The title and short summary that appear in search results, written for the homepage, collections and key products.
- Clear structure. Sensible collections and navigation, so both shoppers and search engines can see how your catalogue fits together.
- Readable web addresses. Product and collection URLs that describe the page, rather than codes.
- Original product descriptions. Written for your products, using the words your customers search with, instead of text copied from a supplier.
- Image descriptions. Short text that describes each image, for search engines and for people using screen readers.
- Search Console. Adding the store to Google Search Console, so you can see which searches bring visitors and spot problems. Shopify creates the sitemap, the list of your pages for search engines, automatically.
- A store that works well on phones. Pages that load quickly and are easy to use on mobile, which search engines take into account.
What it doesn’t do
A basic setup is a foundation. It makes your store easier to find and understand. It doesn’t guarantee rankings or traffic, and nobody honest can. Where you appear depends on your products, your content, how many other stores compete for the same searches, and time. A brand-new store on a brand-new domain usually takes months to build up visibility.
Searches for your brand name tend to come first. Broad searches such as “buy kurtas online” are crowded with marketplaces and large brands, and a new store rarely appears for them early on.
What you can do after launch
- Keep product descriptions original and useful, and add answers to the questions customers ask you.
- Use the same brand name everywhere: Instagram, WhatsApp Business, marketplaces and directories.
- Link to your store from your social profiles, and ask happy customers to mention it.
- Write helpful pages or guides about your products and how to use or choose them.
- Check Search Console every month or so to see what people search for before finding you.
How we handle it
Every new store we build includes a basic SEO setup, so search engines can find and understand your store and products more easily. The exact scope is in your written proposal. We don’t promise rankings or traffic, because they depend on far more than the setup.
What to take from it
- Basic SEO helps search engines find and understand your store.
- It’s a foundation, not a promise of rankings or traffic.
- New stores take time; your brand name usually appears first.
- Original content, consistent naming and links from elsewhere help over time.
